Support Someone Else

If you witness sexual violence against another person, or if someone discloses sexual violence to you, this page will help you support them.

It’s important to remember that survivors have the right to make their own choices, and that safety looks different for everyone.

How to respond to a disclosure

  • Recognize a disclosure.
    • A person may tell you about something that happened to them without using the words “sexual violence” or sexual assault.
    • Reading the ECU policy and procedures will help you recognize and respond when you hear about an incident of sexual violence.
  • Respond with empathy and support.
    • Ask questions about what the person needs.
    • Listen without interrupting.
    • Avoid questions about what happened or why it happened.
    • Validate their feelings and tell them that you believe them.
    • Remind them that no matter what happened to them or what may happen afterward, it’s not their fault.
  • Remember privacy and confidentiality.
    • Each person has the right to decide who they tell and what they share about their experience.
    • If you need advice on how to respond to a disclosure, reach out to Counselling Services for confidential support.
  • Offer referrals for more support.
    • Ensure they know that counselling services are available, as well as the Student Wellness Advocate and Program Manager, Violence Reduction + Incident Response.
    • They do not need to file a report in order to receive support services and care from ECU.

If someone has reported an incident of sexual violence or misconduct to you, you can report it to Justine Langille, Coordinator of Student Rights, Responsibility and Safety.

Faculty and staff are requested to inform the Coordinator of Student Rights, Responsibility +Safety that a disclosure has occurred, but are not required to share any details or identities.

The Coordinator of Student Rights, Responsibility +Safety will reach out if possible to provide support and guidance.
